WTU/Algebra Project Shared Vision Conference

Through workshops, discussions, and demonstrations, conference attendees explored breakthrough, award-winning pedagogical techniques for the teaching of math developed by Civil Rights icon Dr. Robert Moses. Dr. Moses led the Mississippi voter rights struggle in the 1960s and believes that today, the key Civil Rights issue in America is equity in education and that for all students the key to learning how to learn is mastery of basic mathematical concepts.

Keynote speakers at the Shared Vision conference included Dr. Robert Moses, founder of the Algebra Project the National Science Foundation’s Dr. Sylvia James, who is working to broaden participation in STEM throughout the country and Kim Cherry, DCPS Deputy Chief of STEM Education.

Also at the conference, the WTU and the Young People’s Project launched a Flagway league in DCPS. Flagway is an action-packed, competitive team sport through which students in younger grades learn basic math concepts and students in the 11th and 12th grades are trained – and paid – as Flagway coaches, called “math literacy workers.”

This free conference was sponsored by The Algebra Project and the Washington Teacher’s Union.
